The not-so-little black bag

Ave came to me with the wish to have a bag that would fit all the everyday needs of a modern woman. She is a perfect example of a busy contemporary female specimen – working as a media adviser her day often involves running never-ending errands, writing press releases in record time, photographing the everyday achievements, travelling to the places of action and also taking part in festive receptions and cultural ventures. It is remarkable that in her turbulent life she still finds time for herself and in the end of a long day you can find her riding her bike or cooking and dining with friends or reading a book together with her purring cat.

One bag is obviously not enough!

She works in law – so during the day you can find her very disciplined and rather strict, but in real life we have a happy and sincere person who finds time to travel, take her child to craft workshops and make leather shoes for porcelain dolls – here she comes, pump-a-rum! - I give you the full-of-joy-and-laughter Katrin.

A talented bag for a talented man

For years already my graphic-designer-friends had hinted me that my hand written logo was so yesterday and finally they did succeed to make me understand that my visual identity needed to change in the same rhythm as my professional development. One of the wise people trying to make me see the light was Markko Karu – among of the best men in graphic and service design on this side of the world. But still it took me a long time to actually do anything about it as of course every other thing seemed to be more important than dealing with a new logo. Things finally took their own course though and “fortunately” Markko’s old bag started to show signs of fatal fatigue and voilá – we suddenly had something we both needed and also could both offer and that is always a good deal in the creative world :)

Travel in style!

Indrek is the man who likes things around him to look good and made specially for him. As a founder of internationally renowned bicycle brands Velonia and Viks it is only logical that he celebrates every single detail he comes across. Thus I wasn’t surprised at all to see him at my studio door one day wanting to order leather bags not for himself but for his bicycle wheels!

Best alarm clock ever

I have a tendency to put too much on my plate. I think I have recently become better at choosing my challenges but fortunately I could not say no to Indrek who wrote to me and asked me to collaborate with him on the new design for Hekkpipe.

Something to brighten up your day

Today is Mari’s birthday. A few years ago, Mrs Kõiv received a bag designed by me as a birthday present from her family. The bag hasn’t left her side ever since, accompanying her during both trips to the theatre and the training studio, regardless of whether she is wearing an evening gown or leggings.

Joy shared is joy doubled

A chance meeting at a mutual friend's birthday party almost never happened. Had I left half an hour earlier (as planned) on that wintry day, then I would not have been in the same place at the same time with Toomas. Nor would I be introducing our new accessory brand RÜÜ to you today, a project that we have been collaborating on for the last two and a half years.

The therapeutic aspect of bags

Helena’s charming personality could provide enough inspiration for a whole collection of bags. There is a hint of girlish cunningness and boyish trickery mixed with motherly concern, a feminine sense of style and masculine courage in her. She is passionate, sincere and always stands up for her people. The motto for the design of her first bag was “Fortune favours the bold” and only time can tell what the future will bring.

Bag as sculpture

Monika will always be a very important person for me because she was the one with whom we established a joint design studio in Kalamaja in 2010. I was very lucky to find her because while I was learning to swim, she was already an experienced fish in the design pond, so I only had to look across the desk for a role model!

Bagful of design

After several attempts of doing everything myself, I have arrived at the conclusion that everyone should stick to their guns and do what they are good at and enjoy doing. I like designing bags more than anything else in the world and I have honed my skills with every passing year. Tõnu Runnel is one of the best web designers in Estonia which is why I did not doubt for a second when I trusted the design of my new homepage in his capable hands. In return I rescued Tõnu from a tedious shopping trip and exchanged his worn-out bag for a new one, all the while saving several brain cells of my own and getting a new handsome virtual home for my brand which welcomes both the invited and uninvited guests!

A man's bag that women want to wear

My parents moved abroad this summer. My mother was offered a job she could not refuse, my father had not been on a proper vacation for longer than he could remember and my brother and I had fled the nest a long time ago so everything just fell into place and off they went. Thus, my family does not conform to the prevailing trends – the older generation has decided to take over the role of their children and conquer the world, defying the wind and rain. My father embarked on this journey together with a bag I made especially for him.

Modest grandeur

Thinking back in time, Kärt came to my studio not as a client but a friend of my client’s without any intention to buy or order anything. Despite the modest beginnings, Kärt has become one of my main clients who has ordered more than several wallets, cases and a handful of armlets in addition to a bag.

Two in one

A year ago, a mutual friend of me and Maarja made a suggestion to surprise this lovely lady with a Stella Soomlais Design gift card as a birthday present. Today, the beautiful Maarja is roaming the streets of London with the bag on her shoulder, deciding based on the outfit she is wearing and her mood which side of the accessory to use. Read more

Whistle while you work

I lock my studio door on a Friday night to head to a birthday party which is already in full swing. Having savoured the first sip of wine and tamed my roaring stomach with a snack, I find myself talking to a friend who has been meaning to discuss an idea for a bag with me for a while.

Mother, my dearest...

My mother is definitely a Mother with a capital letter – affectionate and attentive, smart and talented, loving and lovable. I have never known my Mother to be embarrassing or annoyingly overbearing. She has been one of my best friends as long as I can remember.
